British Comedies are often representative of the British culture and its former colonies. Typical British humor can sometimes seem puzzling to outsiders, especially where English slang is used. Typical classic humor also makes use of innuendos and double entendres, which received its roots from the early 1930’s cartoon-style saucy postcards. These were hugely popular and often featured characters such as large ladies, under the thumb husbands and vicars involved in a precarious situation or making a comment with double meaning, the creators of these postcards sold over 16 million and British people couldn’t get enough of them until the 1950’s when a new conservative government decided to crackdown on the production of these because of their concern for what they felt were the deterioration of morals in Britain, the most famous movie collection associated with this type of humor are the Carry on Movies.

British Humor and its comedies are famous for using quirky characters, storylines and comedic settings, Norman Wisdom is an impressive representation of this type of humor, his low budget movies never impressed the critics but proved hugely popular with the English audiences, and is still loved and admired today as an English comedic genius.  Other actors such as Sid James used innocent smut and innuendos to create memorable British Comedies that have endured into today’s British comedies.

Most recently British Comedy production has experience success with the releases of The Full Monty, Hot Fuzz and Four Weddings and a Funeral. The Full Monty broke box office history and won an Academy award by using the same recipe that has been used in past years using comedy to look at the struggles of the working class. British Comedies continue to be even more popular today with easier access to DVD’s and the Internet, these movies are now available to be enjoyed by a bigger audience than was ever thought possible.
